The government of Lebanon has condemned an attack on a base of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) that left several Ghanaian peacekeepers injured following a missile strike in southern Lebanon.

According to a statement issued by Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of Lebanon, the incident occurred amid ongoing hostilities between Israel Defense Forces and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

The ministry said the Ghanaian battalion of UNIFIL, stationed in the town of Al-Quzah in southern Lebanon, came under shelling on the evening of the attack. The strike resulted in injuries to three peacekeepers serving under the United Nations mission.

One of the soldiers sustained critical injuries and was immediately evacuated to a hospital in Beirut, where he is currently receiving medical treatment.

In its statement, the Lebanese government condemned the attack in strong terms and said it was awaiting the outcome of investigations being conducted by UNIFIL to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates condemned the targeting of UNIFIL,” the statement said, adding that authorities are looking forward to the results of investigations aimed at uncovering those responsible for the shelling.

The ministry stressed that whoever carried out the attack must be held accountable, describing the incident as a grave breach of international law.

Lebanon further emphasised that targeting peacekeeping forces violates several international agreements, particularly United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, which governs the cessation of hostilities and the deployment of peacekeepers in southern Lebanon following the 2006 conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.

“This attack constitutes a serious violation of international law and the relevant Security Council resolutions, foremost of which is Resolution 1701,” the ministry stated.

The Lebanon government also reiterated its firm rejection of any actions that endanger peacekeepers carrying out their mandate to maintain stability and security in the region.

Lebanon expressed solidarity with the government and people of Ghana as well as the leadership of UNIFIL, while wishing the injured soldiers a speedy recovery.

Ghana is one of the countries contributing troops to the UNIFIL peacekeeping mission, which has operated in southern Lebanon since 1978 to monitor hostilities, support the Lebanese armed forces and help maintain peace along the border with Israel.
