UK's King Charles writes to Ghana on Independence Day

The King of the United Kingdom, King Charles III, has reaffirmed the long-standing partnership between Ghana and the UK and their shared Commonwealth values and cooperation on global challenges.

In a message addressed to President John Dramani Mahama, the British Monarch,
expressed appreciation for the historic ties and mutual respect that underpin relations between the two nations.

“On the occasion of your Independence Day, my wife and I send our warmest congratulations to you and to the people of the Republic of Ghana.

"It is with sincere appreciation that I reflect upon the enduring partnership between our nations, rooted in the shared values and mutual respect that define our Commonwealth. I remain deeply proud of the role our family of nations plays in fostering understanding, cooperation and opportunity across the globe," he wrote.

Reflecting on recent engagements, the King mentioned his brother, Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh's, recent visit to Ghana.

He thanked the Ghanaian authorities for the hospitality extended to the Duke during the visit and for discussions on strengthening collaboration between the two nations.

According to the King, the Ghanaian community living in the UK also plays a key role in strengthening ties between the two countries.

He described the Ghanaian diaspora as a vital bridge contributing to several sectors, including business, education, arts and culture.

The monarch further pointed outthe importance of the Commonwealth’s diversity and the energy of its younger generations, which he said continue to inspire hope and progress across member states.

“In these times of global uncertainty, our collective strength and unity are more vital than ever,” he noted.

Looking ahead, King Charles said he anticipates the opportunity for Commonwealth leaders to meet at the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting scheduled for November 2026, where member states are expected to reaffirm their shared commitments and discuss future cooperation.

He also commended ongoing collaboration between the United Kingdom and Ghana, particularly efforts aimed at addressing climate change.

"I am deeply encouraged to hear how this important work has focused on making urban and rural areas more resilient and better prepared for climate change, including through a new Memorandum of Understanding on sustainable forest management, protecting nature and livelihoods for generations to come", the message added.
