In 1958, just a year after Ghana gained independence from the United Kingdom,
a street in Berlin, Germany, was named Ghana Street (Ghanastraße) to celebrate the historic milestone.

The recognition was in honour of Ghana being the first Sub-Saharan African nation to break free from colonial rule, setting a precedent for the entire continent.

This update was shared on the X page of African First as Ghana commemorated its 69th Independence.

"In 1958, a year after Ghana gained independence from the United Kingdom, Germany named a street “Ghana Street (Ghanastraße)” in Berlin to honour the first independence in Sub‑Saharan Africa," the post stated.

By naming a street in Berlin after Ghana, Germany acknowledged the role Ghana played in inspiring independence movements across Africa.

Ghana's transition from a colony to a sovereign nation under the leadership of its first president, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, signified the dawn of a new era in Africa.
