The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has issued a warning to Mohammed Umar Sanda, a former party stalwart who is contesting the Ayawaso East by-election as an independent candidate, urging him to rescind his decision or face consequences.

According to the NDC Chairman, Sanda has until Election Day to withdraw from the race and rejoin the party.

He cautioned that if Sanda proceeds with his independent bid and later seeks to return to the NDC, he would be allowed to remain in the party for eight years without being permitted to contest for any position.

Speaking at a rally in Nima, Asiedu Nketiah stated, “We are giving him from today until Sunday. If he wants to repent, he should come to the Sunday rally and publicly declare that he has changed his mind so that we can receive and forgive him.

"But once the election is over and he decides to return to the party, he can stay for eight years without getting the opportunity to contest for any position.”

He further emphasised his warning with a metaphor, “If you are sick and you are injected, you may survive if you are lucky, but if you are not lucky, you may die. Once it happens, it happens. After the election, he cannot come back to contest anything in the party for about eight years.”

Mohammed Umar Sanda announced his decision to contest the Ayawaso East seat as an independent candidate against the NDC’s parliamentary candidate, Baba Jamal, citing what he described as the monetisation of the party’s primary election process.
