The Ghana Police Service has had the suspect in the Mamprobi Polyclinic baby theft case remanded in custody for two weeks after being denied bail, despite arguments by her lawyer citing family responsibilities.
According to a report by 3news.com, Latifa Salifu, 33, was remanded into police custody on Friday, February 20, 2026, following her arrest in connection with the alleged abduction of a four‑day‑old baby boy from the Mamprobi Polyclinic’s postnatal ward earlier in the week.

During Friday’s hearing, the defence counsel prayed the court to grant bail to the accused on grounds that she has two children, aged seven and ten, who need her support.
However, after hearing arguments from both the prosecution and the defence, the judge ruled that the suspect should remain in custody to allow investigations to continue.
She will reappear before the court on March 4, 2026, for the hearing to continue.
Dansoman Divisional Commander, Superintendent Juliana Obeng, who addressed the media on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, said on February 17, 2026, at about 10 am, that one Abigail Dzukunu, accompanied by Henrietta Abbey Blessed, reported that an unidentified woman disguised as a nurse had stolen a newborn baby from the Mamprobi hospital’s post-natal ward.
Salifu was arrested by the Dansoman Divisional Police Command on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, after a four‑day‑old infant was reportedly taken from the postnatal ward on Tuesday, February 17, by a woman disguised as a nurse.
The baby’s mother, Precious Ankomah, had informed police that a woman dressed in a peach‑coloured nurse’s uniform took her newborn under the pretext of administering medication before disappearing with the child.
Police undertook a manhunt, and at about 3:40 AM on Wednesday, the suspect was found at the premises of the Korle‑Bu Teaching Hospital with the baby, believed to be the missing child.

Police disclosed that upon interrogation, Salifu claimed she had delivered at the hospital and was discharged due to a lack of bed space, but officers found no record to support her claim.
