The Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has criticised the government over what he describes as a gap between official assurances and the realities facing farmers across the country.
Reacting to comments by the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, that there is food abundance in Ghana, Oppong Nkrumah argued that many farmers have yet to feel the impact of the interventions being touted by the state.
According to an adomonline.com report on February 12, 2026, he questioned the effectiveness of measures announced to cushion farmers, particularly claims that the National Buffer Stock Company is purchasing produce directly from farm gates.
He emphasised that beyond public statements, practical and measurable action is needed to protect farmers’ livelihoods and ensure long-term food security.

“Supporting farmers effectively is not only a matter of economic policy but a national priority that directly impacts inflation, employment, and the wellbeing of millions of Ghanaians,” he said.
He noted that in several farming communities, including parts of his Ofoase-Ayirebi constituency, farmers are struggling to secure buyers for their produce.
As a result, large quantities of food remain unsold, increasing the risk of post-harvest losses and worsening the financial burden on producers.
Oppong Nkrumah further called on the government to explain how the reported GH¢300 million allocated to support the agricultural sector has been utilised, insisting that transparency and accountability are critical at a time when food prices remain a major concern for households.
