The Office of the Greater Accra Regional Minister has issued a firm clarification and disclaimer rejecting allegations that the Regional Minister, Linda Akweley Obenewaa Ocloo, is campaigning for or supporting any candidate in the Ayawaso East by-election.
In a statement released on Saturday, the office categorically denied reports suggesting that the Regional Minister was backing the Ayawaso East Constituency Chairman or any other aspirant contesting the parliamentary slot. The statement described the claims as false, inaccurate, and misleading, and urged the general public to disregard them.
According to the clarification, the Regional Minister’s presence in the constituency was not for political activity or partisan engagement.
The statement explained that Madam Ocloo had just returned from the funeral of a fallen comrade and, based on security briefings received, deemed it necessary to personally visit the area to assess the situation on the ground.
“The Minister acted within her mandate to monitor the security situation and ensure calm, safety, and public order,” the statement noted, adding that the protection of lives and property across the Greater Accra Region remains her primary responsibility.
The office further indicated that aside from an official visit to convey condolences following the passing of the sitting Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, the Regional Minister and her team have not visited the constituency for any other purpose.
Any attempt to link the Minister to partisan political activities, the statement stressed, is without factual basis.
The clarification follows an incident during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary held on Saturday, February 7, 2026, to select a candidate for the upcoming by-election.
Supporters of Hajia Amina Adam, widow of the late Member of Parliament, reportedly hooted at the Regional Minister during her visit to the area.
The hostility was fueled by allegations from some party supporters that the Minister was supporting the Ayawaso East Constituency Chairman, Mohammed Ramne, who is among the aspirants seeking the party’s nomination.
These allegations have, however, been strongly denied by the Minister’s office.
The Ayawaso East by-election was necessitated by the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Naser Toure, whose passing created a vacancy in the constituency. In preparation for the by-election, the NDC is conducting an internal contest to elect its parliamentary candidate.
Five aspirants are contesting for the party’s nod. They include Mohammed Ramne, the Constituency Chairman; Hajia Amina Adam, widow of the late MP; Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria; Dr Yakubu Azindow, a political scientist; and Najib Mohammed Sani.
Party executives and observers have called for calm and unity as the process unfolds, emphasizing the need for a peaceful primary and a respectful campaign ahead of the by-election.
The Office of the Greater Accra Regional Minister reiterated its commitment to neutrality and urged all stakeholders to avoid actions or statements that could heighten tension in the constituency.
