The Ranking Member on Parliament’s Roads and Transportation Committee, Kennedy Osei Nyarko, has strongly criticised the government’s plan to rename Kotoka International Airport (KIA).
Questioning the relevance and economic impact of the proposed change, the lawmaker argued that the move is unnecessary and risks politicising a national asset that has served the country for decades.

“What will be the relevance and the economic impact of this exercise in changing the name of KIA?” he asked in a Facebook post on February 3, 2026, following the announcement by the Majority Leader.
Osei Nyarko, who is also the Member of Parliament for Akyem Swedru, noted that the airport has retained its name through different political eras, including periods of military rule, without any attempts to alter it.
“A name that has been with us even under military rule. Not even Chairman Rawlings made any attempts at renaming the airport,” he stated.
He accused the government of excessive politicisation and warned against actions that could undermine national cohesion.
“Government should not overly politicise everything in this country to the extent of trying to rename an airport that has served generations,” he argued.
Describing the proposed renaming as an affront to national history, the Ranking Member said it diminishes the sacrifices of past leaders and patriots.
Kennedy Osei Nyarko concluded by appealing directly to the President and his administration to halt the initiative in the interest of peace and unity.
“I see this as a travesty of the contributions of our forefathers who laid down their lives and wholeheartedly served this nation,” he noted.
“I urge the President and his government to immediately abort this planned agenda and let peace reign,” he appealed.
His comments follow an announcement by the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, that a bill will soon be laid before Parliament by the Minister of Transport to rename the country’s main international airport from Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport.
“We are changing the name of our airport from Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport. A bill will be brought by the Minister for Transport to facilitate this change. The Accra International Airport Bill will also come,” Ayariga said.

He emphasised that such decisions must be grounded in law and guided by the will of the people.
