The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is gearing up for a crucial election today, Saturday, January 31, 2026, as it seeks to determine its flagbearer for the upcoming 2028 general elections.

This presidential primaries is one of the most significant internal events for the party following its defeat in the 2024 elections.

The primary features five prominent aspirants: former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former Minister for Food and Agriculture Dr Bryan Acheampong, former Minister of Education Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, and businessman Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

With their collective experience and strong political backgrounds, these candidates are vying to become the face of the party in the next presidential race.

Delegates from across the country are participating in today’s election, with an estimated 211,000 members from the party’s constituencies casting their votes at over 300 polling centres nationwide.

The outcome is being closely monitored by party supporters and political analysts alike, as it not only determines the standard-bearer but also serves as a litmus test for the party’s internal cohesion heading into the 2028 elections.

In the lead-up to the primary, the five candidates engaged in extensive campaigning, sharing their visions and policies with delegates and the public.

A significant aspect of this election is the peace pact signed by the aspirants earlier this month, in which they pledged to accept the results and maintain party unity, irrespective of the outcome.

To ensure a safe and credible voting process, robust security measures have been implemented. Thousands of police officers are stationed at polling stations across the country, reinforcing the commitment to a peaceful election.
