Delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency began queuing late on Friday night, January 30, 2026, at the Dome-Kwabenya Football Park, several hours ahead of the party’s presidential primaries scheduled to start at 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 31, 2026.

Some delegates arrived as early as 11:00 p.m. and spent the night at the polling centre, braving the cold weather to take part in the process to elect a flagbearer for the party’s 2028 general election campaign.

The early turnout, according to delegates, reflects the high level of interest in what is widely regarded as one of the most keenly contested internal elections in the party’s history since 1992.

Although the Electoral Commission (EC), together with the NPP Presidential Election Committee and security agencies, has put measures in place to ensure an orderly voting process, delegates in the constituency say they preferred not to take any chances.

Dome-Kwabenya, which has a delegate strength of over 2,000, is expected to record heavy voter traffic, prompting concerns that late arrival could result in long hours of waiting under the sun.

“I came here around 11:00 p.m. because we are determined to choose a candidate who can lead the party to victory in 2028,” a delegate said.

As of 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, about 27 delegates had assembled under three marquees, awaiting the commencement of voting.

The delegates form part of the 211,849 registered voters drawn from all 16 regions who are participating in the nationwide exercise.

In total, delegates from the party’s 275 constituencies, including grassroots organisers, constituency executives, and Members of Parliament, are expected to cast their ballots.

More than 900 polling centres have been designated across the country for the primaries, which are expected to end at 3:00 p.m., after which vote counting will begin immediately in the presence of party agents, observers, and the media.

As voting begins, attention remains firmly fixed on the NPP as it takes a significant step towards choosing the leader who will represent the party in the next general election.
