The Parliamentary Select Committee on Environment, Science and Technology has raised concerns over increasing illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey, within the Newmont Ahafo South Mines concession in the Asutifi North District of the Ahafo Region.

According to a report by adomonline.com on January 26, 2026, the Vice Chairperson of the Committee and Member of Parliament for Suame, John Darko, disclosed that intelligence available to the committee indicates that some individuals have encroached on Newmont’s concession to engage in illegal mining.

He explained that the illegal activities often lead to fatal accidents and violent confrontations between illegal miners and the mining company.

“These actions are unlawful and must be stopped to prevent frequent confrontations between the mining company and residents, which sometimes turn violent and result in loss of lives,” Darko said.

John Darko highlighted Newmont’s contribution to national development through tax payments and its role in reducing unemployment in the area, stressing that residents must help create a peaceful environment for the company to operate effectively.

He assured that the committee will continue to monitor Newmont’s operations to ensure compliance with environmental and mining laws, while protecting the interests of the local communities.
