2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for the Klottey Korle Constituency, Valentino Nortey, is the latest Ghanaian politician in the grip of a United States (US) law enforcement agency.

Valentino Nortey was arrested over a domestic stabbing incident involving a woman along Mayfair Drive in Lower Paxton Township in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, January 17, 2026.

Here is what we know so far about the incident:

The victim:

Early reports indicated that the NPP parliamentary candidate had stabbed a woman in a domestic incident.

New details have indicated that the victim is the wife of Valentino Nortey, Gilda Nortey, who, according to reports, is a US-based nurse.

The police stated that after Gilda Nortey was stabbed, she was taken to the hospital by first responders. They stated that she was receiving treatment and was in stable condition.

Account of family of the victim:

The family of Gilda Nortey, who has called for justice, has also given an account of what transpired.

David Gyapanin, uncle to Gilda Nortey, in an interview with Citi News, said that his niece was stabbed three times by her husband over a minor misunderstanding.

“They had a little argument, and my niece said she may file for divorce if things continue that way. My niece said Valentino threatened to either kill himself or kill her. He stabbed her three times. She pleaded with him to take her to the hospital. He agreed on condition that she would not mention his name,” he said.

He, however, contradicted the report that first responders took the victim to the hospital. He claimed that she drove herself to the hospital after she was stabbed.

"Fortunately, she had the car key and managed to drive to the hospital where she works. She is getting better. As a family, we want nothing less than justice," he said.

Charges filed against the NPP PC:

The Lower Paxton Township Police have indicated that the accused has been slapped with three criminal charges, namely:

Attempted homicide;

Possessing an instrument of crime with the intent to use; and

Tampering with/fabricating physical evidence.

Where the former MP is now:

Valentino Nortey, according to American-based abc27.com, has been detained by American security authorities.

The report indicated that public records at the Dauphin County Prison show that Nortey was denied bail after he was arraigned before the magistrate court, presided over by Judge David Judu.

He is currently being held at the Dauphin County Prison. The accused person will appear before the court again on January 26, 2026, when the preliminary hearing starts.

About Nortey’s political ambitions:

Valentino Nortey became the parliamentary candidate of the NPP after beating Philip Kojo Addo Addison and Samuel Nii Adjei Tawiah in the party’s primaries for the 2024 election.

He, however, lost the 2024 parliamentary election to Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He garnered 23,716 votes (37.5%) while Dr Agyeman-Rawlings retained her seat with 39,997 votes (62.78% of the total valid votes cast).
