The Tanyigbe Traditional Council has called on all parties to respect the judicial process and refrain from actions or statements capable of undermining peace, unity, and public order within the Tanyigbe Traditional Area.
In a statement addressing ongoing misinformation surrounding the Tanyigbe Paramountcy, the Council urged community members, development partners, state institutions, and the general public to disregard false narratives and continue engaging with the duly recognised Traditional Authority of Tanyigbe, led by His Royal Highness Togbega Kodi Adiko VI.
“We therefore call on all parties to respect the judicial process and to refrain from actions or statements capable of undermining peace, unity, and public order within our Traditional Area,” the statement dated December 23, 2025, said.
The Council’s secretary Isaac Tawiah Gbortsu who signed the statement explained that the clarification became necessary following misleading reports circulating in sections of the media questioning the legitimacy of Togbega Kodi Adiko VI as Paramount Chief.
According to the Traditional Council, Togbega Kodi Adiko VI remains the legitimate occupant of the Kodi Stool, which it described as the ancient and paramount stool of Tanyigbe, brought from Notsie during the historic migration of the Ewe people. The Kodi Stool, the statement noted, has for centuries exercised supreme traditional authority over the four divisions of Tanyigbe—Anyigbe, Etoe, Atidze, and Dzafe.
The Council further stated that both oral tradition and documented historical records confirm an unbroken, non-rotational succession of six Paramount Chiefs from the Kodivi Royal Clan of the Adiko Royal Family. Togbega Kodi Adiko VI is the sixth in that lineage, following Togbe Kodi Adiko I, Togbe Fiakpoe Adiko II, Togbe Apatsi Adiko III, Togbe Goto Kɔsi Adiko IV, and Togbe Kwasi Adiko V.
Touching on the process of his enstoolment, the Council said, “Togbega Kodi Adiko VI was duly nominated, selected, confined, and enstooled following the passing of his predecessor, Togbe Kwasi Adiko V, in strict accordance with Tanyigbe and Ewe customary practices.”
The process, it added, involved the full participation of kingmakers and included all required rites such as oath-swearing, sacred rituals, and public outdooring.
On the legal status of the chieftaincy dispute, the Traditional Council acknowledged that the matter is currently pending before the National House of Chiefs. While the Volta Regional House of Chiefs delivered a ruling in March 2025, the Council confirmed that an appeal was duly filed in line with the law.
It stressed that under Section 34 of the Chieftaincy Act, 2008 (Act 759), the filing of an appeal automatically operates as a stay of execution of the Regional House of Chiefs’ decision.
“Accordingly, any claim suggesting that the enstoolment of Togbega Kodi Adiko VI has been nullified, declared void, or rendered illegitimate is legally unfounded and misleading,” the statement clarified.
