Jean Mensa and deputies must go – Fifi Kwetey backs call for removal

Fifi Kwetey (R) says the EC chair Jean Mensa (L) must be removed

The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has backed calls for the removal of the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, and her deputies from office.

Speaking on JoyNews on December 17, 2025, about the petitions seeking the removal of the EC officials, Kwetey said he would not prejudge the outcome but emphasised that the constitutional process must be allowed to run its full course.

“I'm not going to jump the gun. I want to say that if the petitions have been submitted, let the due process be followed,” he said.

However, Kwetey did not mince words in describing what he considers the gravest threat to democracy, arguing that any institution responsible for denying citizens their right to representation should not remain in office.

According to him, the issue goes beyond partisan interests or the position of party leadership and reflects a broader national sentiment.

“For me, that's the biggest crime that can ever be committed. Any group that supervises that has clearly no reason to remain in office. That's the biggest crime you can commit in any democracy to take away the right of people from being represented.

“So, it's not so much about what I want, it's about what I think is wrong,” he indicated.

He further suggested that public opinion would overwhelmingly support the removal of EC officials if an independent assessment were conducted.

Kwetey further insisted that the calls for accountability are not driven by directives from party executives but by what he described as the collective will of the Ghanaian people.

“If you could commission an independent survey to gain the sentiment of the people of Ghana, I believe that a vast majority of Ghanaians would want them gone too,” he noted.

“So, I don't think it's anything to do with a General Secretary or the National Chairman. I think the people of Ghana would want them gone too,” Fifi Kwetey argued.

The petition against the Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson and her deputies was filed by an EC staff member, Joseph Blankson Adumadzie, over alleged misconduct.
