An Accra High Court on December 12, 2025 granted an injunction filed by the maternal family of the late Highlife legend Daddy Lumba, halting plans to hold his funeral on December 13, 2025.
The Court has also restrained the release of his body from the mortuary until the substantive case is fully determined.
The ruling follows a contentious legal dispute initiated by five maternal relatives, Obaapanyin Afia Adomah Pakoso, Robert Gyamfi (Wofa Yaw Poku Asuafua), Georgina Gyamfi, Ernestina Fosuh and Nana Afia Kobi Pakoso, who filed a writ on December 3 seeking several orders to assert their customary and legal authority over the burial arrangements.

The plaintiffs asked the Court to prevent the first defendant, Kofi Owusu Abuakwa of Kumasi, and former members of a dissolved committee, from accessing or operating the Daddy Lumba Memorial Foundation account at CAL Bank, which was established to fund funeral and related expenses.
The maternal family argued that, under customary law, they hold the rightful authority to manage funeral rites and maintain custody of the deceased’s remains. They expressed concern that the body could be released and burial plans carried out without their consent.
However few hours later, the Accra High Court ordered that Daddy Lumba's funeral should proceed as planned.
Earlier, the court ruled that the applicants must deposit GH¢2 million with the court by 2 p.m. on Friday, December 12, 2025, or the funeral will proceed on Saturday, December 13, 2025.
The court noted that while it respects the applicants' concerns, the injunction carries significant financial implications and could unfairly burden the respondents.
The judge therefore ordered the applicants, who include members of Daddy Lumba's maternal family, to pay GH¢2 million as security to cover potential costs arising from the delay.
However, after the applicants failed to pay the required sum, the court ruled that the funeral could proceed on the 13th.
Daddy Lumba, who passed away on July 26, 2025, at age 60, has been at the centre of a complex family dispute over who has the authority to lead and finance his funeral arrangements.
