US-based diasporan alleges landlord demanded extra fees after paying $1,532 rent

A US-based diasporan living in Ghana has shared her frustrating experience of what she describes as a potential rental scam.

The unidentified woman, who goes by the TikTok handle @starringcourtny, recounted in a series of videos posted on December 1, 2025, that she had moved into a new apartment designed for returning members of the Ghanaian diaspora and marketed as “super comfortable and super safe.”

“This is what it looks like when you’re fighting for your sanity. Another day in Ghana and another day of somebody trying to steal my money… Today, I moved into a new apartment. It said the house is actually made for the diaspora to return to something that’s super comfortable and super safe.

“Was I comfortable and safe? Yes. But was I missing the comfortability that makes me happy? Yes — like running water consistently, consistent electricity, consistent transportation,” she said.

According to her, she paid $1,532.62 for a 27-day stay, believing that the amount covered the entire rental period.

“I just really needed something that was comfortable for me, so I found this house and I paid them $1,532 and 62 cents,” she said.

However, shortly after moving in, she claimed she received an invoice demanding additional payment, with the landlord insisting that the original rate was inadequate.

“I moved into the house and they sent me an invoice needing more because the rate when I paid it wasn’t enough. They could get more. That’s not how that works. A dollar is a dollar; it doesn’t change for me. And they are like, ‘well, you need to just pay us more money.’ I’m not paying you more money. I am paying you for 27 days, and that’s too much already,” she added.

In a new TikTok update, the woman said that in an effort to resolve the dispute, she went to the Rent Control Office in Ghana. A meeting has been scheduled between her and the landlord, whom she alleges tried to cheat her.

“I’m just leaving the Rent Control Office here in Ghana. I went to the Rent Control Office and talked to the director, and he has set a meeting for me and the American who has cheated me for next week at 9 a.m. He will listen to both of our sides and determine what should happen,” she said.

“Thankfully, I have all the documentation — the bill, the payment, and the change in cedis. At no point has the rate been the rate she’s requesting so that she can get my money back,” she added.

Meanwhile, she revealed that the court date has been rescheduled to December 22, 2025, claiming that the landlord, whom she has accused of attempting to scam her, could not attend the initial hearing due to unspecified “complications.”
