Ghana is advancing plans to expand its gas processing capacity and strengthen its financial health within the energy sector.

That's according to the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor.

Speaking on a panel at the West African Energy Cooperation Summit 2025 on December 2, 2025, Jinapor announced that the government is setting up a local gas processing plant in the next 12 months to allow the country process more of its own gas.

"We want to process that in Ghana and our vision is that in 12 months, we should deploy a lab gas processing facility so that we can increase our gas consumption. Also, we are working with the OCTB field, they can bring on about 50 mmscf. I've been talking to our Nigerian counterparts as well, I want to work with them and their private sector counterparts," he said.

He added that work is progressing with the OCTB field, which is expected to contribute about 50 million standard cubic feet of gas. Ghana is also deepening engagements with Nigeria, including private companies, to secure additional supplies.

The minister also stressed that improved financial management is already drawing investment interests.

"What I've seen about this sector is that when there is efficiency, when there is improvement, capital flows to the sector; it's automatic. So, when people see that your financial health within the energy sector is improving, like we are doing, when I assumed office, the payment through the cash waterfall for the whole year 2024 was GH¢6 billion," he added.

On the Cash Waterfall Mechanism (CWM), the minister noted that Ghana has now settled on payments for gas supply and the West African Gas Pipeline, which strengthens the country’s ability to obtain cheaper and more reliable financing.

He said the CWM has enabled the government to pay almost 100% of its IPP debt.
