Otuo Serebuor Opoku-Ware, a graduate of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), says he felt fulfilled after switching from General Arts to excel in engineering.

According to him, after completing his first year in General Arts at Senior High School, he began questioning his priorities and the rationale behind his choice.

“Since I had no interest in studying law or other General Arts-related professions, I discussed the matter with my mother and switched to science, eventually ending up in engineering,” he told Vok Live.

He recalled, “After my first year, I started to realise my potential. I was thinking, why am I really doing General Arts? What do I really want to accomplish? I never thought of being a lawyer. So why am I here? I remember going back to explain to my mom that I wanted to restart senior high school. I eventually entered the College of Engineering with a General Arts background.”

Otuo Serebuor admitted that the initial stages of his engineering studies at KNUST were challenging, especially when he realised some of his colleagues had competed in the National Science and Maths Quiz.

“Competing with students who had about three years of science experience, some even representing their schools in the National Science and Maths Quiz, was intimidating. My goal when I entered KNUST’s civil engineering programme was to earn a first-class degree. Given my background, achieving that was gratifying enough, but later I realised I could do even more, so I went for it,” he said.

He described his exam preparation, “I was just writing physics and chemistry. I started preparing about three weeks before the exams, having studied for only six months prior. Preparing in such a short time was tough, but I worked hard with summary notes and believed I could succeed. I think it’s not difficult if you really focus.”

Otuo Serebuor ultimately fulfilled his ambition, earning a first-class degree and graduating as the overall best student of KNUST’s College of Engineering.
