The Stop Galamsey protest commenced on September 22, 2025, with some organisers, including members of the Democracy Hub, arriving at the designated meeting point.

The group, led by activist and lawyer Oliver Barker-Vormawor, is pressing for urgent government action to end illegal mining activities, which they argue are destroying water bodies, farmlands, and livelihoods across the country.

Security personnel from the Ghana Police Service were present at the protest grounds to monitor the situation.

Their presence follows tensions during previous demonstrations, which in some cases led to arrests and confrontations between protesters and the police.

A member of the Democracy Hub disclosed to GhanaWeb that 53 people were arrested during their protest in 2024.

“We were 53 that got arrested last year. We are hoping to get 53 people and interested Ghanaians who would want to join the protests,” he stated.

According to him, the group is seeking to mobilise at least the same number of committed demonstrators this time around, along with other concerned Ghanaians, to make their voices heard.

The Stop Galamsey protest has become one of the most visible civil society efforts against illegal mining, drawing attention from environmental activists, community leaders, and political observers.

Organisers say their objective is not only to highlight the dangers of galamsey but also to hold leaders accountable for failing to enforce existing mining regulations.

As the demonstration unfolds, attention remains on how the government and security agencies will handle the protest, especially given the history of arrests linked to such civic actions.

The outcome is expected to shape future engagements between activists and authorities on the galamsey issue.
