Welcome to GhanaWeb’s live updates of the parliamentary by-election for the Akwatia Constituency in the Eastern Region.
The by-election was necessitated by the death of the sitting New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament for the area, Ernest Yaw Kumi, who died after a short illness on July 7, 2025.
Three men – Bernard Baidoo, the candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC); Solomon Asumadu, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate; and a third candidate, Owusu Patrick – are contesting in the by-election.
The total number of registered voters for the Akwatia Constituency is 52,328, per the Electoral Commission of Ghana register used for the 2024 Election.
The by-election will be held in 119 polling stations.
The Akwatia Constituency has had representation in Parliament since the 1st Parliament of the 4th Republic of Ghana. The seat has been won by the NPP five times and the NDC four times.
