The Minister of the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, has announced that the government has successfully repatriated over 2,241 street beggars to their home countries.

He made this disclosure during the Government Accountability Series held on July 14, 2025.

According to the minister, the repatriation exercise was carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection and the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS).

He explained that the initiative has not only helped restore public order in urban centres, but also provided targeted support to vulnerable populations through key interventions.

“The ministry is mapping out strategies to ensure we eliminate these challenges from all our streets,” he stated.

In May 2025, the Ghana Immigration Service, in a special operation, picked up over 2000 foreign street beggars across various locations on the streets of Accra.

The operation carried out on Friday, May 16, 2025, led to the arrest of 384 male adults, 577 male children, 525 female adults and 755 female children.
