Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has paid a heartfelt tribute to late former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on July 13, 2025, at 82.

In a moving message shared on Facebook, Dr Bawumia expressed his deep sorrow and extended condolences to the people of Nigeria, acknowledging Buhari's significant contributions to the region.

He described Buhari as a "fine gentleman" who was deeply committed to the welfare of his people, especially the underprivileged, a "true leader" and a "statesman of impeccable integrity."

According to a report on July 14, 2025, Buhari died in London on Sunday afternoon.

He was a towering figure in African politics, having led Nigeria both as a military ruler and later as a democratically elected president. Notably, he made history in 2015 by becoming the first opposition candidate in Nigeria to defeat an incumbent.

In his tribute, Bawumia highlighted the indelible mark Buhari’s leadership has left on the continent and conveyed his condolences to the government and people of Nigeria, acknowledging Buhari's commitment to regional stability and his instrumental role in fostering strong bilateral relations between Ghana and Nigeria.

Describing Buhari’s leadership style as firm yet humble, Dr Bawumia emphasised his dedication to tackling corruption and improving governance in Africa's most populous nation.

"President Buhari was a fine gentleman who showed exceptional commitment to his people. His humility, discipline, and vision for a better Nigeria will be remembered," Dr Bawumia stated.

He concluded his message by praying for Buhari's eternal rest and offering strength to his family and the people of Nigeria during this difficult time.

The former Ghanaian vice president noted Buhari's efforts in combating corruption and promoting good governance during his tenure.

As tributes pour in from leaders across the continent, Buhari's passing has prompted a period of national mourning in Nigeria, with flags flying at half-mast and official arrangements underway to return his body from the UK.
