The Minister of the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, has addressed the brutal assault on former Awutu Senya East lawmaker, Mavis Hawa Koomson, which occurred during the Ablekuma North parliamentary election rerun.
According to him, the incident is currently under investigation by the Ghana Police Service to determine the circumstances surrounding the assault.
Speaking at the maiden edition of the Government Accountability Series on Monday, July 14, 2025, Muntaka disclosed that he had reached out to Mavis Hawa Koomson to express empathy and assure her of swift police action.
He further indicated that he had appealed to her to cooperate with police investigations should she be invited to provide an account of the incident.
“I can assure you that when this nasty, unfortunate incident, which is embarrassing to the political class, happened, I called Hawa Koomson to empathise with her. I told her I've instructed the IGP to investigate it thoroughly, and my plea with her is that when they invite you, please go make all your facts so that it will help them to be able to ascertain what truly happened,” he said.
The minister added that anyone found culpable would face severe consequences.
“And then all the perpetrators - those who instigated the thing, those who contributed to any part, the police will determine what crime they've committed, and they will be able to deal with it.
“I will not want to be speaking specifically about what somebody was holding, because in the video, you see everybody holding one thing or the other, and somebody jumping. Let's leave that to the police to do their work,” he assured.
The electoral rerun was marred by violence, particularly at the Odorkor Methodist Church polling station, where unidentified men attacked Mavis Hawa Koomson while she was observing the voting process.
The incident has since received widespread condemnation from the general public.
