President John Dramani Mahama has emphasised the need for Ghanaians to take greater control of the country’s gold mines and natural resource exports, asserting that it is time for citizens to become the primary beneficiaries of Ghana’s vast mineral wealth.

Speaking at the inauguration of the GoldBod Task Force on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, President Mahama highlighted the importance of Ghanaian ownership and management within the extractive sector, particularly in gold and diamond production.

"If we are to create prosperity for our people, it means we must take greater control of our natural resources. And it’s not only Ghana making this move, other countries are also taking steps to safeguard their resources. Botswana, for example, is doing just that," he stated.

He described the establishment of the GoldBod Task Force as a step in the right direction and called on all Ghanaians to support its mission.

The President added that the task force would help realise the vision of protecting Ghana’s mineral deposits for future generations.

"GoldBod has come to stay, and it should be a national priority for every Ghanaian," Mahama emphasised.

The creation of the Gold Board is in line with the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) 2024 manifesto, which seeks to formalize the mining sector and strengthen Ghana’s position in the global gold market.
