Traders who defy regulations and sell on pavements and streets within Accra’s Central Business District will be fined GH¢2,000.
This was announced by the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, during a decongestion exercise carried out by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly on Tuesday, May 20, 2025.
The exercise aims to remove street traders from unauthorized locations, ease traffic congestion in the capital, enforce city bylaws, and improve sanitation.
During the exercise, the Minister stated, “We are going to activate our task force to work 24 hours. They are going to draw a red line on the road, and if you cross that line, you will be required to pay a fine between GH¢1,500 and GH¢2,000. We will ensure that there are designated leaders in all the markets, in addition to the task force, to monitor activities and ensure compliance.”
The Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of the AMA, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, also disclosed that as part of efforts to regulate street trading under the government’s 24-hour economy initiative, the Assembly is considering plans to block specific streets within the CBD on designated days.
“For those who do not have space in the market, under the 24-hour economy plan, there will be specific days when certain streets will be blocked to allow market women to sell there while taking our tickets. During these times, traffic will be redirected,” he was quoted as saying by Citi Newsroom.
