The Ministry of the Interior in line with the Public Holidays Act has declared Thursday, May 1, 2025, a public holiday.

In a brief statement signed by the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, the day is statutory public holiday and should thus be observed as such.

β€œThe general public is hereby informed that Thursday, 1st May 2025, marks May Day (Workers Day), which is a Statutory Public Holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country,” the statement said.

A celebration of labour

In Ghana, May 1st is observed as May Day, a statutory public holiday dedicated to commemorating the achievements of workers and the labor force. Officially recognised as Workers' Day, it celebrates the contributions of workers to the nation's socio-economic development.

The holiday is marked by events such as marches and parades by various worker groups in regional capitals, organised by trade unions and labor organisations.

When May 1st falls on a weekend, the following Monday is typically declared a public holiday, as per the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act (Act 601). For instance, in 2022, when May 1st was a Sunday, Monday, May 2nd, was declared an additional public holiday.

May Day is one of approximately 13–14 statutory public holidays in Ghana, which also include Independence Day, Constitution Day, and Farmers' Day.
