CPP must unite first - Chairman

Kumasi, July 23, GNA - Mr Samuel Kwabena Danso, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Convention Peoples' Party (CPP), has appealed to the party to smooth over its internal petty differences before it goes into unity talks with other Nkrumaist parties.

He said it was important they put their house in order before they proceed with the alliance talks.

Mr Danso told the Ghana News Agency that there were sharp divisions among the candidates who contested the party's 2008 presidential primaries and their supporters and said this needed to be tackled first.

"It is only when the CPP is restored to its full strength that optimal benefits will be achieved in any eventual merger with like-minded political parties," he said.

Mr Danso said the party was getting stronger in the Ashanti Region and that everything would be done to build its structures so that they would become more functional ahead of the 2012 general election.

"What is required of all true members of the CPP is to stick together, make the necessary sacrifices and work hard to broaden the support base."

He said by doing this the party could improve on its performance in the general election that is two years away.

Mr Danso appealed to the party's supporters to remain loyal and steadfast in the belief that the future is bright.
