Ampofo commissions EU projects at Afram Plains

Tease(E/R), Aug 23, GNA - The Eastern Regional Minister, Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, has commissioned two educational projects, funded by the European Commission at a total cost GHC 58,500.

The projects, aimed at reducing poverty in the area, comprise a three-classroom block for the Dim Primary School and a six bedroom teachers' quarters at Tease.

The Government contributed to the funding in line with the EU micro project programme.

Prior to the establishment of the school, the Dim community had only a dilapidated block that catered for three classes with students going beyond the primary level travelling some 40 kilometres to nearby Tease.

Mr Ofosu-Ampofo commended the EU for its significant support towards increasing access to basic infrastructure in deprived communities.

He said it was remarkable that the EU had since 2006 invested GH¢4,908, 381 and an extra GH¢434, 384 in income generating activities in the region.

The Regional Minister, however, appealed to the Commission to consider the building of the entire primary stream with accompanying staff quarters for deprived schools.

The District Chief Executive, Mr Charles Apraku, said he would use his tenure to focus on building a sound educational infrastructure to enhance economic growth.

He said the implementation of the EU projects in conjunction with local communities had saved the tax payer millions of cedis.

The Programme Manager of the EU Micro Projects Unit, Mr Dankyi Darfoor, called for protection of the infrastructure provided to ensure their longevity.
