100 Navy recruits pass out in Tema

Tema, Aug 14, GNA - A total of 100 Recruits of the Ghana Navy on Friday passed out from the Basic and Leadership Training School (BLTS) at the Eastern Naval Base in Tema. The Recruits made up of 57 females and 43 males, undertook a six-month course in standard military and basic naval training at the Command.

Subjects studied by the recruits included, Field Crafting, Military Law, Weapon Training, Tactics, Shipwreck and Ship Husbandry. In January this year, the BLTS admitted a total of 105 recruits, but one of them died, two were dismissed for presenting fake documents, one for gross indiscipline and a fifth one withdrawn for medical reasons, reducing the number to 100. Mr Kweku Akpotosu, Tema Metropolitan Co-ordinating Director who reviewed the passing-out parade on behalf of Mr Robert Kempes Ofosuware, Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, congratulated the recruits for enduring the training.

Mr Akpotosu advised them to use the basic training to aspire to greater heights in their military career. He told them to be steadfast to enable them to properly discharge their duties to the country, and protect its Constitution. The Co-ordinating Director noted that the Navy was needed to protect the country's oil find, saying that, they would be unable to do so without the acquisition of some needed logistics, including ships. He said plans were far advanced for government to purchase new ships and other equipment for the Navy, to position personnel to protect the oil fields.

Mr Akpotosu implored them not to use their profession to engage in illegal activities and molest civilians, but rather strengthen their relationship with the public.

He also advised the public to support and give the needed co-operation to the military in the discharge of their duties. Six recruits received certificates and gifts for their outstanding performance during the training.

Augustina Tenortey received the best all-round award, while Delight Happy Abajongawo won the best in weapon handling. Lieutenant K.K. Donkor, Commanding Officer of BLTS administered the oath of allegiance to the recruits during the parade.
