NDC MPs support Chambas

THE National Democratic Congress (NDC) Members of Parliament (MPs) have described Dr Mohammed Ibn Chambas as a refined diplomat whose candidature for the position of Executive Secretary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) should receive massive endorsement by countries in the sub-region.

The MPs said Dr Chambas would bring to bear on the operations of the sub-regional body his long standing experience in international diplomacy if he is offered the ECOWAS top post.

According to the MPs, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Bimbilla has an excellent track record of assisting in the resolution of conflicts in the sub-region and, therefore, the right choice to manage the ECOWAS secretariat.

The MPs were of the opinion that their colleagues belonging to other political persuasions would put aside political considerations and support the candidature of Dr Chambas to become ECOWAS Executive Secretary.

They also commended the efforts of government to support the bid of Dr Chambas to steer the affairs of ECOWAS stressing that his appointment to the position will enhance the stature and image of Ghana.

The MPs said even though the NDC has not taken an official position on the candidature of Dr Chambas to head ECOWAS, they are strongly convinced that the leadership of the party would give its blessing to it.

The Member of Parliament for Gomoa West, Ms Ama Benyiwa Doe, was of the opinion that Dr Chambas would receive the nod of leaders in the sub-region to breathe new life into the activities of the secretariat to meet the expectations of member countries.

She said West Africa needs a skilful negotiator in the calibre of Dr Chambas who has, over the years developed the knack to get the interlligent in civil conflicts in the sub-region to smoke the peace pipe.

The MP for Gomoa West said Dr Chambas, as a former deputy minister, endeared himself to a number of West African leaders through his negotiating skills that ensured the speedy resolution of the Liberian and Sierra Leonean crises.

The MP for Avenor, Mr Doe Adjaho, also spoke highly of Dr Chambas describing him as a top shot diplomat who is a deep-seated intellectual possessing considerable negotiating skills and can handle the ECOWAS Executive Secretary portfolio.
