Curfew on Bawku and Gushegu renewed

Accra, June 15, GNA - The Ministry of the Interior has on the advice of the Upper East and Northern Regional Security councils, renewed the curfews imposed on the Bawku Municipality and Gushegu township and their immediate environs for another week with effect from June 15.

A statement in Accra signed by Dr Kwasi Akyem Apea-Kubi, Deputy Minister of the Interior, said the curfew hours for Bawku remained unchanged from 1600 hours to 0600 hours the following day. The curfew for Gushegu Township also remains unchanged from 1200 hours to 0400 hours each day.

The government said even though calm has been restored to Bawku and its immediate environs, "peace is still deemed fragile as tension and suspicion prevail in the aftermath of a shooting incident last Thursday".

"Government will like once again to appeal to all the factions to exercise maximum restraint and work towards lasting peace and harmony. "The security agencies are closely monitoring the situation to ensure that nobody takes the law into his own hands to foment further troubles."

The government is maintaining the ban on all persons in the Bawku Municipal area, Zabugu, Binduri, Pusiga, Zoasi and Gushegu townships and their environs from carrying arms, ammunitions or any offensive weapon. Any persons found with any arms or ammunition will be arrested and prosecuted.
