Movement appeals for the release of Tsatsu Tsikata

Kumasi, July 30, GNA - The Ashanti Regional branch of the Free Tsatsu Movement, has appealed for the release of Mr Tsatsu Tsikata, former boss of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), who was jailed recently for wilfully causing financial loss to the state. A statement signed by Mr Yaw Adusei, Regional Coordinator for the movement and issued in Kumasi on Wednesday, said the former GNPC boss was not treated fairly by Mrs Justice Henrientta Abban, the Judge who presided over the case, as she issued the judgment when Supreme Court proceedings in respect of the case was pending. It pointed out that Mr Tsikata was also denied the right to seek counsel of his own choice, adding that the court compelled him to be his own counsel which violated the constitutional right of an accused to choose a counsel of his choice

The statement said in recognition of the essence of Freedom and Justice and the Rule of Law, it is very significant to address some of the irregularities in the imprisonment of the former GNPC boss to help strengthen democracy. It emphasised the need for sympathizers of the movement in the 39 Constituencies in the region to join hands in fighting for the release of Mr Tsikata.
