Water shortage hits Yendi

Yendi, April 25, GNA - Yendi township has been hit by a serious water shortage for the past one week as a result of the drying up of River Dakar, the only source of water for the people in the area.

For the past week economic activities had virtually come to a halt. Day and night, women and children carried jerry cans looking for water. The Yendi Municipal Chief Executive, Alhaji Mohammed Habaib Tijani, who visited the water pumping site of the river with members of the Yendi Municipal security committee had instructed the assembly to make announcements with information vans to appeal to the general public to help desilt the mud to enable the valve to suspend in water for pumping to take place.

The Yendi Municipal branch manager of Ghana Water Company Limited, Mr. Peter Wuni has commended hundreds of volunteers from Yendi township who came out in their numbers to help desilt the river to enable them pump water to the town.

According to the Manager, the area of the fall is dried up and needed maintenance. He indicated that during the rainy season when water gets to the fall or weir, it escapes through the leaking points of the weir which makes it difficult for enough water to be stored during dry season for pumping for consumption.

The chairman of the Yendi Municipal assembly water resource sub-committee Mr. Majeed Chendoo appealed to the government to connect Yendi to River Oti instead of River Dakar because it could not meet the increasing demand of the population of the town.

Mr. Chendoo expressed his gratitude to the assembly members, Zoom Lion workers, men and women and the youth who were taking part in the voluntary work on the river.
