Kofi Wayo's Allegations Against Akuffo-Addo

It is not clear who started it or how it got started but somehow NPP presidential candidate Nana Akufo-Addo is facing unproven allegations related to the taboo subject of drugs.

No one person has been more strident and insistent than former NPP, former PNC member Kofi Wayo. Members of the NDC have also gone public with their takes too. For such people it's become something of a tit-for-tat. Any attack on Professor Mills, especially in relation to his health, is met with the response accusing the NPP presidential candidate of drug taking.

Yesterday Mr. Wayo was on an Accra FM station firing on all cylinders making all manner of wild allegations on the subject and more or less daring the NPP to take him on.

And that's precisely what the party intends to do in the coming days, according to the campaign manager of Nana Akufo-Addo's campaign team, Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku. In a short interview with ADM yesterday, Dr. Apraku denied vehemently the allegation of drug use by the NPP presidential candidate as is being peddled by Mr. Kofi Wayo and others.

Dr. Apraku said, 'It's not true, he has never been into drugs or arrested before."

Since his victory in the December 2007 NPP national delegates congress, Nana Akufo-Addo has come under an intense vilification campaign in that direction, but has all the while kept his cool. Though the allegations have not been substantiated by the rumour mongers, Mr. Kofi Wayo who after deserting both the NPP and PNC is now the founder and leader of the National Renaissance Party (NRP), yesterday claimed that he has a report from an intelligence source to prove his allegation. He mentioned a local journalist as a source.

His outbursts and allegations must have reached a point where the NPP regards it as hurtful and is now determined to react and set the records straight so that it does not dog the campaign as the elections draw closer. Dr. Apraku told ADM that the NPP campaign team is preparing "a strong and robust response to those allegations".

He would not provide any details but concluded that "for now what I can tell you is that we will hold a press conference at the appropriate time to respond to it".
