Vice President leaves for Rome

Accra, Feb 12, GNA - The Vice President, Alhaji Aliu Mahama, has left Accra for Rome to attend the 31st session of the Governing Council of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). He was accompanied by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, NEPAD and Regional Integration, Mr C. Y. Brempong Yeboa and some officials from the Office of the Vice President.

During the session which takes place from February 13 to 16, Vice President Aliu Mahama would stress the importance of irrigation to the national poverty reduction strategy.

He would also urge the IFAD council to come out with strategies that would improve upon the lives of rural folk as part of efforts geared towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals. These include knowledge transfer, effective marketing of items from rural areas and others. The Vice President is also expected to visit Cuba where he has been invited by Louis Fenandez, Vice President of the Council of State of Cuba. He is expected to return home on February 27.
