Do not confine your children with disabilities

Accra, 08, Feb. GNA - Parents were on Friday urged to expose their disabled children to outdoor activities and encourage them to interact with Society, since they also have something good to offer.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Mr. Alexander Tetteh, National Administrator of the Ghana Society of the Physically Disabled said it had come to the notice of the Society that parents preferred to spend on their able bodied children to the disadvantage of those with disabilities.

"This sort of discrimination against the disabled in the society should stop since it will not augur well for their psychological development".

Mr. Tetteh reiterated his call to all district assemblies to allocate about 2 per cent share of the Common Fund due to the Society's branches in their localities to under take projects.

"The Society needs this money to organize itself and to implement its activities. It is sad that the district branches do not even have money to write common letters", he added. He said since the premises of the Society in Accra were mentioned in 2006 Budget that it would be rehabilitated, nothing had been done to fulfil that promise.

"All our follow-ups on the project have so far proved futile", he added. The Administrator expressed his dissatisfaction with the inability of its sector ministry, the Ministry of Manpower, Youth and Employment and the Social Welfare Department to construct rumps to make the movement of the physically disabled easier. He however expressed his satisfaction with some of the banks for the construction of rumps to facilitate the movement of the physically disabled. Mr. Tetteh appealed to the government to come to the aid of the disabled in terms of malaria control, women empowerment and skills training.
