Princess Ann visits NSS

Accra, May 2, GNA - Her Royal Highness, Princess Anne, daughter of the Queen of England on Wednesday paid a working visit to the National Service Secretariat to have a first hand information about their work, especially with the voluntary Service Scheme.

Princess Anne works closely with the Voluntary Service Overseers, (VSO), a British Organisation partnering the Voluntary Programme under the National Service Scheme which seeks to provide opportunity for people to work as volunteers and also assist people with disability. Nii Doodo Dodo at the VSO office in Ghana explained that so far the voluntary service scheme had provided opportunity for lots of people, especially the youth to contribute to the development of the nation with particular reference to the educational sector. He said the programme continued to receive increase patronage since its inception in 2003 and had employed over 8,500 volunteers in the 10 regions of Ghana.

Nii Dodo noted that the programme was meant for people who had completed national service and still wanted to serve the nation as a form of instilling national cohesion and patriotism.
