Hearts Win FA CupToo

Hearts 2 (Addo 10th, Kuffuor 89th)
Okwahu 0

Champion club, Accra Hearts of Oak defeated Okwahu United 2-0 to win the ABC/FA Cup at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.

This gives Hearts a double, having win the league trophy a couple of weeks ago. Hearts dominated the early stages of the game and could have gone ahead as early as the first minute, but Ishmael Addo, fired a free left footer, wild off target.

Ishmael missed another good opportunity in the sixth minute when he headed a rebound away, after Emmanuel Osei Kuffour had slammed his shot against the bar during a great run down the left flank.

In the 10th minute however, Ishmael atoned for his misses, when he tapped in the first goal from a pull out by Charles Allotey from the right flank. The early goal spurred the Phobians on as they pinned the Okwahu boys to their own half, but resolute defensive work by Earnest Boateng, Johm Maclean and Robert Kingston denied them more goals.

Hearts continued to miss chance after chance and an unpardonable one in the 38th minute by Charles Allotey drew "oohs and aahs" from the crowd. Okwahu had a good chance to draw even in the 44th minute but Aryee Tetteh fluffed the opportunity as he failed to connect a through ball.

When the second half began, Okwahu grew in strength and confidence as they took over the mid-field and threatened the Hearts defence continuously. In the 59th minute, Earnest Boateng broke loose and dashed into the Hearts penalty area but his final contact with the ball had it sailing over the bar.

Okwahu went close again in the 64th minute, when Edmond Copson blundered in mid-field and gifted Earnest Boateng with the ball. Earnest curled a powerful left footer on target but Sammy Adjei was alert to parry it for a corner.

Okwahu hit the back of the net in the 78th minute when an under pressure Dan Quaye scrambled the ball into his own goal. Strangely enough, referee Alex Quartey disallowed it for offside.

This seemed to have sent a warning signal to the Phobians who responded with swift attacking play that unsettled the visitors. In the 88th minute, Ishmael went free on the right flank and centred for Osei Kuffour to jab in for the second goal. Hearts controlled the final minutes of the game till referee Quartey ended proceedings.
