CDD-Ghana to observe Nkoranza North bye-election

Accra, March 8, GNA - The Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) said on Thursday that it would observe the March 13 Nkoranza North bye-election and had already deployed two trained observers to cover the pre-election events.

A statement signed in Accra by Mr Eric Boateng, Head of Programmes of CDD-Ghana, said the observation would cover both the pre-election period and Election Day activities.

It said the pre-election observation would include rallies, activities of principal actors, party officials and activists, political demonstrations and protests, the general political atmosphere, activities of important state agencies such as the Electoral Commission and National Commission on Civic Education and possible abuse of incumbency.

The statement said on Election Day, the Centre would deploy two other experienced observers to assist in the observation, coordination of activities of observers and collation of final reports and results.

"With our overall objective to strengthen democracy in Ghana and beyond, the Centre believes that the watchful eyes of civil society is necessary to minimise, if not prevent, incidents that might mar the conduct of the polls.

The Nkoranza North seat became vacant after the incumbent, Eric Amoateng who is being held in the US for drug charges, resigned.
