President J. A. Kufuor is expected to leave for the Republic of Benin tomorrow for a day's return trip for the inauguration of an energy interconnectivity project from Nigeria to Benin and Togo.
A released signed by the Press Secretary to the President and Presidential Spokesman, Mr. Andrew Awuni said, the inauguration is as a result of an agreement between Nigeria on one hand and Benin and Togo on the other for the supply of 80 megawatts of energy to the two countries.
"President Kufuor's participation at the inauguration is to enable him conclude negotiations with the Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo on the possibility of benefiting from the interconnectivity by way of extending the energy supply to Ghana," he said.
The two presidents discussed the deal to supply energy from Nigeria to Ghana on the sidelines of the recent AU Summit in Addis Ababa.
Mr. Awuni said another possibility that President Kufuor would be looking at, is the retrieval of 80 megawatts of energy that Ghana supplies to Togo and Benin in view of their new energy supply source.
He said a Ghanaian team of experts is already in Cotonou to meet with their counterparts in the three countries to examine the technicalities of the arrangements. In his State of the Nation Address to Parliament last week, President Kufuor enumerated various efforts by government to find a lasting solution to the energy problem in the country, which the Ghana-Nigeria deal was among the key initiatives.
Others include a 300 megawatts plant in Tema, 126 megawatts emergency plant and a 600 megawatts Ghanaian-Chinese joint venture.
