GNAT Gen Sec re-elected for top post

Accra, Feb. 8, GNA - The General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Mrs Irene Duncan-Adanusa has been re-elected President of the Executive Committee of the Education International Regional Committee of Africa Region (EIRAF). A statement issue by GNAT on Thursday said she would serve her second term from 2007-2010.

The election took place at the Sixth Pan-African Conference in Cairo, Egypt, from January 27-31.

The conference was on the theme: "Uniting for Quality Public Education and Sustainable Social Development."

Over 500 delegates and observers from 52 African countries whose unions are affiliated to Education International (EI), the global federation representing 30 million teachers, professors and education workers from pre-school to university in more than 160 countries around the globe attended the conference.

EI has its headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, while its Africa Regional Secretariat is in Lome, Togo.

The statement said delegates were unanimous on the need for unity within and among teachers' unions in Africa. They urged various national unions to initiate and encourage discussions towards unity, particularly within their national environments and sub-regions.
