NPP government won't perpetuate its rule - Kufuor

Abofour (Ash), Oct. 23, GNA - President John Agyekum Kufuor has stated that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) does not intend to perpetuate its leadership rule on the people of Ghana.

He, however, indicated that if at a point Ghanaians themselves wanted the Party to remain in power, they were fully prepared to take up the mantle again.

President Kufuor was addressing separate rallies at Abofour and Kokote to round off the parliamentary by-election campaign in the Offinso South on Sunday.

Dr Owusu Achaw Duah, a Medical Practitioner, is contesting the seat for the NPP in the election slated for Tuesday, October 24. He told the teeming members and supporters of the Party that the rallies were to bid farewell to the late Kwabena Sarfo, former MP for the area and to introduce his successor to them.

President Kufuor urged them to vote massively for the candidate to bring more development to the area, adding that the priority of the NPP government was to develop the nation.

He said the party stood for unity, peace, freedom and progress and appealed to the people not to allow detractors to divide their ranks but rather support the government to achieve its objectives.

President Kufuor was not happy about the behaviour of former President J J Rawlings and said he and his government has no time for him now but would reply him at the appropriate time.

He said ex-president Rawlings did not want to hear the success story of the NPP and was using various avenues to discredit his government.

He expressed concern about the negative attitude of ex-President Rawlings destroying the good image of the NPP government abroad, begging for funds to destabilise the country and finding loopholes to divide the people at the local level.

Mr Boniface Abubakr Saddique, Minister of Manpower, Youth and Employment, said the government was doing all that it could to provide employment opportunities for the youth.

Mr Albert Kan-Dapaah, Minister of Interior told the people to vote for the Party's candidate to reduce the insults and the harassment by members of the NDC in Parliament.

He told the people that because they followed the NPP during the reign of the NDC, they were deprived of some projects and now that their party was in power they should support it to enhance progress and development in the area.

Dr Duah said when given the mandate he would do everything within his sleeves to support the development of the constituency to raise the living standards of the people.

Mr Peter Mac-Manu, National Chairman of the NPP said the party stood for unity, saying a massive vote for the party in the bye-election would enable it to continue with its good policies and programmes in the constituency.
