Floods cut Aflao-Accra Highway at Afife

Afife, May 17, GNA- Floods caused by intermittent rains on Tuesday and Wednesday morning at the southern tip of the Volta Region has cut the Aflao-Accra trunk road between Avalavi and Afife.

Travellers going either direction have had to come down from their vehicles to allow drivers to drive through the waters bursting out of the many culverts under the road.

When the Ghana News Agency (GNA) visited the scene on Wednesday morning young men acting as guides were directing vehicles through the waters for a fee of 10,000 cedis.

Saloon cars were the most affected with many of them lining the road as their owners or drivers decided if it was prudent to risk crossing.

The situation had considerably slowed commuting on the rather busy highway.

The affected area is low-lying and swampy and prone to floods. Tuesday's rains were heavy and lasted for several hours, while that in the early hours of Wednesday lasted for about three hours.
