SRC shocked at disqualification of election winner

Accra, April 22, GNA - The Students' Representative Council (SRC) of the University of Ghana has expressed shock at the electoral commission of the SRC fiat disqualifying Lord Koranteng Hamah, winner of the first round of the SRC elections from contesting in the run-off due to be held on April 25.

In a statement signed by Anugu Fortunate, Press Secretary of the SRC, the Council said such a decision has no legal and constitutional basis, since no competent court had found him guilty of any crime. It argued that having won in the first round of the elections, Lord Hamah was duly qualified to contest the up-coming round-off and therefore said the claim of the EC should be treated with utmost contempt and disregard.

The statement said the SRC was aware of certain invisible forces manipulating the EC to disqualify the candidature of Lord Koranteg Hamah.

It said the SRC was contemplating on constituting a new electoral commission and urged all students to conduct free and fair elections and also to investigate the conduct of the current commission to establish the truth.
