Youth resist attempts to relocate ferry at Afram Plains

Residents of Afram plains are set on a collision course with authorities of the Volta River Transport in disagreements over moves to relocate the only ferry in the area to Yeji -Buipe.

The residents who have vowed to resist the move, maintain the ferry is their only means of transport through the Agordeke-Kpando-Torkor route.

It took the intervention of the police to stop scores of angry youth who had massed up at the offices of the Volta River Transport in the area from locking out officials.

They said they were there to demand the keys to the ferry to stop it from being moved to Brong Ahafo where hundreds of commuters have been stranded after the closure of the Yapei and Buipe bridges.

Local authorities including the assemblyman of Donkorkrom, Yao Didgier, have been engaging stakeholders on the best way to solve the issues.

Meanwhile, Member of Parliament (MP) for Afram Plains North, Ms Betty Crosby-Mensah, who has not been happy about the decision to relocate the ferry has been exploring the way forward.

In another development, travelers from the Northern Region through Salaga-Yeji have had to hugely depend on the ferry due to the closure of the Yapei and Buipe bridges for repair works, a situation most travellers say is causing deep inconvenience to them.

Several of the commuters have been complaining of staying overnight at Yeji in order to catch the only ferry available for transport.

Vice President of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union Robert Sarbah has been appealing to government to speed up repair works on the bridge to ease the stress of the travellers.
