Youth and Sports Minister launches 'Youth in Sports' initiative: 750 trained

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Isaac Kwame Asiamah has launched the Youth in Sports program at a short event held at the University College of Education, Winneba.

The initiative which is under the auspices of the Youth and Sports Ministry, Ministry of Labour Relations and Youth Employment Agency seeks to equip the country's youth in sports with skills in artisanship.

Speaking at the event, the Sports Minister, Isaac Asiamah intimated that the future of the Ghanaian youth is of paramount importance to the Akufo-Addo led administration hence the launch of the initiative.

“Akufo Addo wants to secure your future, hence the launch of this program. This program is on point. "We need dedicated youth like you who would be trained in various fields of endeavour. Ghana should benefit from its investment. We will use sports for job creation. When a country invest in sports, it produces a healthy and productive population. In all, the two-year program is expected to train 5,000 youth nationwide.

The Minister also mentioned that the government will employ measures to ensure that national facilities are well-maintained to prevent situations where the government would be required to spend huge amount of cash on renovations.

He said, "we are known to be destroyers of government works due to lack of maintenance, we invest so much in infrastructure and leave it to rot. For over ten years we have left our stadiums to rot but we are saying never again. This is why we have trained these youth to take up the job and manage our facilities."

750 participants graduate from 'Youth in Sports’ program

The Youth Employment Agency (YEA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MOYS) have graduated the first batch of participants in the 'Youth In Sports’ program under the Community Improvement Module.

750 participants, drawn from all 10 regions in the country underwent training in pitch management, federation assistants, fitness and wellness, coaching and sports journalism.

A total of 5,000 persons are expected to participate in the project with the first set of 2,000 participants graduating this year.

Central Region Minister, Kwamena Duncan, Ignatius Baffour Awuah, employment and Labour Relations Minister, Emmanuel Asigri, CEO, National Youth Employment Authority graced the event.
