‘Your time is up!’ - Rent Commissioner warns quack agents

Acting Rent Control Commissioner, Frederick Opoku, has issued a strong warning to unauthorised real estate agents, directing them to register with the Real Estate Agency Council (REAC) before operating or risk facing sanctions.

In a video shared on social media on August 23, 2026, Opoku urged unregistered agents to stop operating and approach the mandated regulatory body for the necessary training and certification.

“Most of the woes of tenants stem from the operations of these quack agents,” he said.

According to him, many of the individuals operating as real estate agents have no formal training or certification to provide such services.

“I call them the quack agents. I call them stomach agents. I call them the ‘nkwakwan dua ase’ agents. They go and beg landlords to give their properties to them and they put hefty charges on it for tenants,” he said.

Opoku said the Rent Control Commission, under his leadership, is determined to address the activities of unauthorised agents and improve the regulation of the rental sector.

“The Rent Control Commission of the Republic, under my watch, believes that we have to change the narrative,” he stated.

He disclosed that the Commission would collaborate with REAC between September and December 2026 as part of efforts to sanitise the real estate agency sector.

“I and the CEO of Real Estate Agency Council, Mr Jeffrey, will ensure we tighten the laws to ensure only persons certified to operate are the only ones who can engage tenants and landlords in this country,” he said.

The Acting Rent Control Commissioner also cautioned landlords against handing over their properties to unauthorised agents.

He warned that landlords who disregard the directive could risk losing the assistance of the Rent Control Commission should they encounter problems with agents and subsequently seek the Commission’s intervention.

Opoku urged landlords and tenants to deal only with properly certified real estate agents as the authorities intensify efforts to regulate the sector.
