The Majority in Parliament is pushing back hard against claims by the Minority that they were sidelined during the approval process of the controversial GH¢1 energy sector levy.

Responding to the Minority’s accusations of secrecy and lack of consultation, the Chairman of the Energy Committee, Emmanuel Kwesi Bedzrah, said the opposition is peddling deliberate falsehoods to score political points.

“All the members on the Minority side in the Finance Committee, and all the leaders of the Energy Committee, were present at the committee meeting when we discussed this amendment bill,” Bedzrah stated firmly.

“We all went through the bill, and no one left. They were all there.”

He didn’t hold back, naming specific individuals in the Minority ranks: “Honourable George Kwame Aboagye, Collins Adomako Mensah, along with all the Minority MPs, they were all there. In the end, a majority decision was taken, and then you organised a press conference to claim you were not consulted. This is deliberate misinformation from the Minority.”

The GH¢1 energy levy has sparked nationwide debate, with critics saying it further burdens citizens amid rising utility tariffs.

The Minority insists the levy was “smuggled” into Parliament without adequate stakeholder engagement.

But according to the Majority, the records speak for themselves—and so does attendance. “This is just populism. They were not only consulted—they participated fully,” Bedzrah emphasised.
