The Youth Employment Agency (YEA) has collaborated with the Ghana Education Service (GES) to recruit 7,730 Ghanaians from various districts in the country to be trained and deployed to some selected Senior High Schools across the country as School Guards (SGs) and Kitchen Assistants (KAs).

As part of the Schools’ Support Programme aimed at ensuring the health and safety of students and staff of various Senior High Schools in the country, successful youth will be deployed to work in these two operational areas.

The aim of the programme is to engage unemployed youth in various districts to promote a healthy and safe environment to enhance the development and educational achievement of senior high students and staff.

They will work at the respective security posts, kitchens and surroundings of schools to provide a healthy and safe school setting to deliver excellent academic performance.

This programme will run as a sub-programme under the Youth in Community Improvement Module as established in the YEA Regulation LI 2231.

The SGs and KAs will form an integral part of the school’s operational teams and assist in the implementation of its activities in compliance with the GES standards and protocols.

Objectives

The programme seeks to promote the health and safety of students and staff of various high schools, create decent employment opportunities for young Ghanaians, create a supportive and orderly environment for educational activities and provide excellent nutritional services for staff and students.

It will also create opportunity for youth to learn a trade or continue their education while participating in the programme.

School Guards

The School Guards will provide the first level of security for students and staff on campus.

The Guards will man the various points of entry and exit to various institutions.

Personnel will inspect persons and vehicles entering and exiting school premises at any point in time.

They will also handle some basic forms of enquiry from the general public or refer them to appropriate offices for further action.

It is also expected that the guards will assist in any other assignments by school authorities.

Kitchen Assistants

The Kitchen assistants will assist the cooks and pantry staff in the various institutions in providing for the basic nutritional needs of staff and students.

They will assist in the preparation of food and serving it to students.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at YEA, Mr Justin Kodua Frimpong, speaking at a ceremony yesterday to begin the partnership, explained that the programme is open to all Ghanaians between the ages of 18-35 years.

He said all applicants for the employment streams should at least be a holder of Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), adding that positions would be advertised in the dailies from Thursday, October 24, 2019.

Mr Kodua Frimpong further explained that employment for prospective applicants would be for two years.

GH?350 allowance

Every successful applicant will receive a monthly allowance of GH?350.
He explained that monies for the payment of allowance will be derived from some five percent of funds deducted from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFUND).

Director General of GES, Professor Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa, was grateful to YEA for the initiative to augment government’s free SHS.

He made a passionate appeal to prospective recruits to refrain from putting up unwarranted excuses after getting employed.
