Work to commence on Enchi-Asankrangwa Road

THE Government has completed studies on the Enchi-Asankrangwa Road to enable work to start next year.

The District Chief Executive of Aowin Suaman, Mr Kingsley Ofori Asante, who announced this, at the second ordinary meeting of the assembly at Enchi, in the Western Region, said the reconstruction of the road would be tackled under the Road Sector Development Programme.

He explained that even though negotiations to reconstruct the road started last year with MOTA Companchia, S. A. firm, no contract was signed.

He said the newly repackaged studies on the road are technically sound and would guarantee a long life span.

Mr Ofori also disclosed that the government has concluded an agreement with the European Union to connect 14 communities in the district to the national grid.

He said ?249 million has been disbursed to more than 300 individuals and 11 groups under the Poverty Alleviation Scheme.

He, however, expressed dissatisfaction at the low rate of re-payment by beneficiaries of the scheme.

The district chief executive further expressed concern about the low level of revenue generation by the district assembly.

He said out of estimated revenue of ?81.6 million for the year 2000, only ?34.9 was collected.

He noted that as at June, this year ?19.7 million out of an estimated amount of ?101.6 million was collected.

Mr Asante also assured chiefs in the area that his administration will not meddle in chieftaincy affairs.

He noted, however, that his outfit will not tolerate chieftaincy disputes, that will generate into violence to retard progress.

He, therefore, appealed to traditional councils in the district to fill all vacant stools and guard against disputes.

He said the establishment of development fund by the assembly, which will be supported by the citizens, will reduce the over dependence on the common fund.

The Presiding Member of the assembly, Mr Theophillus Tano Eric, called on members to work in unity to ensure the development of the district.
